Israel is furious over a recent British decision to reconsider its policy toward Hizbullah. Tel Aviv described London's move as "extremely dangerous."
"Israel absolutely rejects the possibility that Hizbullah could become a party that dialogue could be held with," Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yossi Levy was quoted as saying. "Any decision by a Western state, particularly a major country like Britain, to hold such talks is rejected," he stressed.
According to Levy, Israel protested to Britain about its decision, noting that the Israeli government does not separate between the political and military wing of Hizbullah.
Britain's Foreign Office announced Thursday that it has contacted Hizbullah's political arm in a bid to reach out to its legislators. Levy said "Hizbullah is a terrorist organization that dragged Lebanon into war with Israel."
The Beirut-based As Safir daily on Monday quoted Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman as saying that the U.S. was previously informed about the British decision to reestablish contact with Hizbullah and that it did not oppose the move.
