Welcome from another newbie. I agree with your assessment on how the general public's view of us. I only talk to a couple friends about my prepping.

Great name... read a book called Guns Up a few years back. About a couple Marines in Nam who were M60 machine gunners.

Welcome from SE Arizona. Look forward to your gear reviews. Also, look at MAGS thread http://www.survivalmagazine.org/surv...orth-a-read%29 where his reviews are almost a must read .

started a topic Hi from Texas

    Hi from Texas

Hey everybody. I'd just like to pop in and introduce myself.

I"m a ~30 year old male from NW Texas (Lubbock) who has been into the preparedness scene for 5 years or so now (well I've been into making "survival kits" since I was a kid, only joined the online communities or started gear whoring in the last 5 years). I, like a lot of people started off by buying guns... lots of guns... but I got involved with another online forum where I met some people and now, although I still own the guns, I actually enjoy the outdoorsy aspects of preparedness more than the tactical stuff. I try to go hunting/camping/hiking at least 4-6 times a year and I consider myself reasonably well prepared (or as prepared as a city dweller can reasonably be without dropping $100k on a retreat). I consider preparedness my hobby and wrap my outdoor pursuits and shooting into that.

I stumbled into this site looking for gear reviews. Looking over your forums I think I might consider moving from my old home to here. I am drawn to the quality of posts and the relative suppression of trolls. Also i like that the "be prepared" forums have way more posts than the "off-topic" forums, in my opinion I think off-topic forums tend to attract the more immature people on the internet, and I'd be just as happy if they didn't exist. I also appreciate that you are looking at presenting yourself in a more mainstream manner, as the manner in which survivalism & preparedness is presented in most other places I have found is either based upon religion, anti-government anarchism or extremely nerdified (zombies!), making me embarrassed to be associated with it and having to work hard to hide it.

I'm a very busy person, and I'll never be one of the top posters, but what I will do (if I stay happy with community) is contribute a hundred or so solid posts a year (reviews, product comparisons, and well thought-out, non-flaming opinions) and be willing to participate in local/regional events.

Here's to hoping for a mutually beneficial relationship.
