  • Hello from Middle Tennessee

    *waves at the invisible posters!*

My name is Lindy, I'm a fifty one year old single mom, and I figuratively tripped over a link to this forum in the Nashvile Craigslist...I was searching using "survival", hoping some good items might show up, but this was the only thing related to it that came up, go figure.

Anyway, I know it is mostly, probably all, guys here, so I'm hoping you fellas won't mind a middle aged mom type hanging around off and on, trying to learn whatever I can. I don't think we have very long before SOMETHING melts down, whether it's the economy or govboys hammering us or some other natural disaster, so I'm trying to cram as much knowledge in my old brain as I can.

It's tough, gotta tell ya, when you are a single mom, working hard but not making a lot, and wanting to find some way to be prepared for shtf. I've got a little bit put back but so far to go that it is at times overwhelming, and I'm doing it alone, as it seems other family members just shrug and have this 'whatever is gonna happen is gonna happen' sort of attitude. So I don't really talk to anyone about it, I just wear out youtube looking for all the info I can find, as well as search the internet for more info.

Looks like a gold mine of info here, and from the posts I've read, you guys do seem to be a level headed bunch, which is a definite plus. Thumbs up on a job well done.

Welcome from SE Arizona. We are not all guys hanging out here. My spouse, Skyowl's Wife, and daughter, FrogTacos, are both posters here. Again, welcome.

Hi Lindy; Hang in there.....the truth will soon be known to all and you can congratulate yourself for taking steps to prepare. I also live in middle Tennessee so there are others like yourself out there doing what you are doing. Keeping a low profile is not a bad thing so just keep plugging away a little at a time and hopefully other family members will come to their senses. You'r going in the right direction. Anguilla

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

It helps to know that...1. I'm not the only gal around, yay! and...2. Others 'get it'! Helps me not feel quite so alone. It's really scary, to be honest, watching things unravel all around us while so many people seem so unbelievably blind to the obvious!

I'm about to go dig through the forums, see if you folks have found some free resources on some of what will be needed, since my finances are so severely limited. The list is frankly overwhelming for what it will take to have a chance to survive, even if you plan on buggin IN rather than OUT.

I'm currently on the lookout for: barrels to store water/food as I obtain both...heirloom seeds that don't cost an arm and a leg....planting containers so I can extend planting things by growing veggies indoors as well as out...teaching myself how in the heck electrical and mechanical stuff works so someday, if I have time, I can figure a way to DIY power sources like wind and solar...and that is just for starters.

              The brain boggles!

Instead of rain barrels you might want to consider one of those large livestock waterers that Tractor Supply or the Co-Op sells. They a clear plastic, hold about 500 gallons of water, and have fittings that you can connect a water hose to. I bought a used one($100 bucks) and put it on the high side of my barn. Then I ran a flex pipe from roof downspout to tank and connected water hose. Gravity flow gives me good pressure and I can use it for watering garden, livestock, etc. It is a little unsightly but you can screen it with shrubs or fencing. Landscape contractors are good source for plant containers and will probably give them to you for the asking. Good source for everthing is the Crossville Flea Market(weekly event) and you can get some good bargains. Also, check out "goLSN" in the farm supply section. Hope this helps! Anguilla

Welcome from Clarksville .... I've had some success getting five gallon food grade buckets / lids from walmart's and kroger's bakerys. I get plastic water barrels from rural king for $10.00 a each. If you're going to place your supplies in larger containers, remember that you'll need to be able to move them .... have various ways to make fire .... and learn to make fire without them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrNiO...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXX8Sdj-UTM

great suggestions all around, thanks for the tips! I've been youtubing, getting a laugh at dsart1's vids, don't know where in Tennessee he lives, but he is a hoot!

I've noticed several prepper types on youtube who have garnered a big following, but I just mainly watch and don't comment hardly at all, too many haters on all sides. For myself, I tend to take the middle road, avoid extreme anything, and try to learn wherever I can. Hoping we have enough time to figure things out and get something ready, just in case. It would be great if I had another source of income, but for now, it's limited to what I can earn where I work, so I have to be as smart as I can on where I spend the little I have. Ten dollars sounds GOOOOOOD! lol! Need to figure out where the heck rural king is, as I haven't seen anything like that in the area I'm in. :D

thanks for the links, by the way, very useful! I've watched a lot of cutlerylovers vids, and many others. I've got a channel there, just haven't done any videos yet. If anyone here has a channel, feel free to let me know, and I'll sub to it.

There may be other sources for the food grade barrels. Soft drink distributors and wineries use them to ship their product.
