Just joined the group and I have to say that things look quite interesting so far!!

I'd be interested in speaking to anyone who's got any experience in disaster preparedness, or survival skills.

Things are a wee bit different here in the U.K.

Hardly anyone wons a gun and, even those who do, have to have special reasons and licenses for them.

Survivalism and retreatism isn't really that well subscribed to over here. That's why I usually end up gettin most of my information and tips from American sites. You guys seem to have it in your blood!!

Anyhoo, if anyone wants to help a complete novice, I'd really appreciate it.

Welcome. What part of Scotland are you from. I spent a few weeks there several years ago. I was mostly in Aberdeen, but was fortunate enough to see quite a bit of the country, albeit briefly. It is a beautiful place, and I would think that there are some good options for bugging out if things get bad. Particularly since it sounds like there would not be many like minded folks escaping to the highlands.

Firearms make survival and preparedness easier in some cases but you don't need them. The best course of action is to put skills in your head so you can solve any problem that comes your way.

A good bug out bag (or kit) is a good place to start with supplies to carry you through 72 hours. Then you can upgrade to a week, then a month, 3 months, etcl till you get to your 'comfort level' for preps...

I am sure you got a lot of things to share with us as well :)

Welcome fastfranny you have a great country there, plus you are the only other people to kick the brits out. I did some work in Clydebank, Glasgow, Falkirk and Edinburgh, Scotland was one of the best countries I have ever worked in and the people were the nicest even in Clydebank.

Yes, unfortunately things are starting to go quite bad her economically. Lots of long-standing businesses (50 yrs+) have been going out of business, production plants are going down to 3-day working weeks or closing and things have been quite tight all round.

Strange thing though, perhaps it's just because I'm not an Economist, everyone I know is still making the same amount of money, spending the same amount of money and not really curtailing on their lifestyles. Even though, it's all doom and gloom on the news. Parliament (our Senate, of a kind) is encouraging us to 'Spend our way out of the slump'.

A lot of people I speak to reckon it's a ploy by the Euro powers-that-be to get Britain into the European Union properly and embrace the Euro as currency. Don't mean to get all conspiracy theory on you and make you think I'm paranoid, but it's starting to look that way.

Probably doesn't mean much to you across the pond at the moment, but a European Union with one currency, one person in charge could make for a lot of problems for you long-term.

I'm from Clydebank myself. Nice to see you got a good reception in when you were over here. Most of us are OK.

I've gotten together a few like-minded people. Most of us are novices. Even though, we're trying to get together sometime in March (weather's a wee bit better then) to do some outdoor work.

Just planning on working our way through some of the more basic skills; firestarting, shelter, wild food & game. That sort of thing.

There's a lot of places, even quite close by, that offer a lot of isolation from Big Brother. Water's never going to be a problem (when we get a dry day, even if it's cold, we call it 'Summer'!!) and food is quite plentiful.

I did a weekend retreat last year in the forests of Kippen. Managed to get myself completely lost and would probably still be wandering aroung if I hadn't eventually managed to get a reception on my mobile phone.

That was what really gave me the wake-up call to get my finger out and try to learn a wee bit about outdoors work.
