  • My best friend is sick!

    :(:(:(
I woke up at 0530 this morning...made coffee, checked my email, then the wife comes down and say's that our boxer "Cain" doesn't look right. I go upstairs and hes sitting on the bed...staring at the bare wall, with his ears laid back. He acts like he can't get off the bed himself, so I help him down, and he just stands there, with a pitiful look on his face. He eventually makes it downstairs, then acts like he's too weak to climb up onto the sofa. Doesn't want to go outside (usually he really needs to go!) won't eat or drink. I call the vet and they say to go ahead and bring him in NOW. He'd slept with us, but had spent about 2 hours in his crate yesterday, so I check the crate for any evidence of him being sick. I find 2 strips of plastic bag that he apparently regurgitated at some point...but they were dry...so no telling when that happened.
I have to carry him to the truck, but he did walk from the truck to the vet's office. He finally pee'd in the parking lot....and wagged his stub a bit when the doc came into the room, but he's just not himself.
Doc kept him for x-rays and possible blood work...it's been 2.5 hours now and it's driving me nuts!

Sounds like what happened to one of my Danes a couple years ago....she ate a loaf of bread.....bag and all. She showed the same symptoms as you're describing, and we learned that part of the bag had created a digestive blockage. She had to have surgery to remove the plastic from her intestine, but pulled through okay.;)

Hope your pooch just has a cold or something...best wishes; Will include your fam in our prayers;)

Vet just called...they found a blockage. They don't think he'll require surgery, but they are now doing a barium to make sure.

Sorry to hear that snal.. but glad that things are gonna get better!

I lost a German Shepherd about a year and half ago to being poisoned by antifreeze  If I ever catch that SOB  I hurt for awhile... My other shepherd is trained NOT to eat or taste ANYTHING wihtout me or my family feeding it to him.

The other one is learning this and percautions are in place to prevent a repeat

I love my dogs, more than I like any 2 legged critters except my immediate family :)

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I am glad your pooch is ok. Sometimes my dog is the only one who does not PMO (pi$$ me off). I understand the ties between a person a his/her critter.

Good news about your dog. Our pets are like family. We have four dogs now and a groundhog. We had a couple of deer adopt us last year about this time. One left after a couple of months and the other one stayed until just a few months ago when I think some hired killers at a nearby vineyard put her down one night. She'd get in my wife's car, come in the house, even go turkey hunting with one of my kids. She was great camoflauge. He would have to push her out of the way with the barrel of the gun in order to shoot a turkey!

He's home for the night, but has to go back for a couple more x-rays tomorrow. The barium passed thru his system, so there's no complete blockage. They found a small something in his stomach, and strange looking parts of his intestinal track. He's a bit more like himself, but still not normal.

Hopefully he will be fine in a few hours. I've been owned by several great dogs and know what you are going through.

                      Thanks all!
He kept me up most of the night by being a bit restless. He slept sitting up, leaning against the back of the sofa. He's hungry...but he can't eat until after I take him back to the vet at 11:00.

I stayed up most of the night with him, poor guy spent hours standing on the sofa, leaning against the back. I think that sitting or lying down was uncomfortable for him.
We were at the vet when the doors opened at 11am this morning.....good news!
Whatever it is that caused the blockage, is now in his colon, so the doc says no surgery as it should pass if it made it that far. Had to put him on some prescription food that should help take it easy on his system today. Antibiotics due to evidence that whatever it is may have irritated the stomach lining as well as the intestinal tract.
Been walking him around a bit since we got back home around 1pm. Poor fella doesn't have much energy, but he's slowly getting back to normal....gobbled the RX food up really well.
Bad news is that we got a call at 6am informing us that my MIL is on her way to the ER. She's suffered from dementia for a couple of years, and didn't look good at all Christmas day. They think she may have pneumonia and they are worried that she may also have liver problems.
                            Been a rough few days.
