  • SHTF colony

So we all talk about what we are going to do ourselves but is there any reason we can't set up a plan as to where we can all bug out to and start our SHTF colony? where would be the best area? Maybe multiple areas with comms between different outposts? Thoughts

I agree to some extent. There will be colonies either formed before or after. Some are allready formed as seen on tv. I think a higher percentage of people willing to be prepared are leaders. Go in there own direction so to speak. If your colony was to grow to big (recognizable) and become organized before shtf then the government will step in shoot a bunch of people confiscate your guns and send the adults to prison and rehabilitate the minors back to sheeple. Even if you havn't broken any laws.

All of us have plans to some extent or another. I think to public a plan would turn into either a refugee destination or a target. And as Echo pointed out to many chiefs. As things go south we will all become aware of who else is in our general AO. And cautionously decide how to interact. It would be handy to have some type of, if not co-operation then at least awareness for trade of services and goods.

I am a member of a organized group of folks....my situation is a bit different from most.

My thoughts are that folks will "double or tripple up"...and try to weather the storm as well as possible.

Many will not fair well....everyone who lives will learn a new respect for necessities.

Some will be killed....some will starve to death.

People will become very cautious around others....no one will want to show their hand.

Slowly villiages will form....trading will resume....civilization as we know it will be over.....

I just hope that it is a massive reset switich for our gov't....back to the way it was.......otherwise it will be a dictatorship....I'm not looking forward to that....:(

          Just my $0.02.

The community I live in is rather unique. By Colorado standards its considered a 'sub-division' but in all honesty its more like its own little town in many respects. Population maybe 200 or so, surrounded by various peaks and mountain ranges but also high altitude itself at 9000 feet. We have a board of directors and the HoA is very different from most. We also have root ties to 'old West' mentality in many ways. The area was initially settled by a couple former outlaws in the late 1800s. It hit a 'population explosion' of 9 people in 1953 and a 4'x8' realty office still stands at our local community center. In the 60s the area seemed to attract hippies and many who still wanted to live the original mountain life. As time went on, electricity came through, and population increased but its remained an average of 200 or so for the past 20 years I've lived in the area and surrounding communities. I lived here in the 90s when I was in high school and then moved to other areas still in the town of Bailey before attending college. Lived in another 'sub-division' area after I returned from college but when I found the right woman we moved back to Harris Park.

Strategically speaking its an absolutely amazing location and the people just seem more 'real' here. Everyone has a keep to themselves mindset that just suits. But like another post in here suggesting 'hick mindset' we quickly learn without offering too much info who is like minded and who is an outsider. Without going into too much detail the wife, kids and I were welcomed with open arms in short order and the specific skill set I bring seems to have placed me on a mild pedestal for lack of a better term. There is a small group of us who have taken it upon ourselves to plan the defensive nature of our community and actively pursue the preparation of "what if" type scenarios. I love it here and we'll be quite alright in many shtf situations. Communications to outside communities is very accessible and planned for, but realistically depending on what happens, there's no real need for us to go anywhere, I just feel sorry for anyone trying to get in. LOL

I like the Idea of small groups or communities, where I am up here in the mountains is fairly secluded, I have Pisgah National Forest as my back yard, and 2 acers on which to play...the only "member" I have is my Better Half, she and I have talked about meeting others with the same basic out look on the future as ours, but it seems as if those folks tend to be to far away, or wraped up in there own plans. Oh Well, we will just keep communicating with all the fine folks here and maybe get to meet some of you in the future.

Your idea of all of us getting together to ride out the storm sounds good in theory. But, IMHO it would be worse that riding it out alone. Let me explain. For one thing I don't know anyone on this site well enough to invite them to dinner yet alone spend an unspecified amount of time relying on them for the safety and well being of myself and family. It has also been my experience in general that the large majority of people are selfish and full of BS. Now no one needs to take offense at this ,but, I would not be surprised if a good percentage of the posters on this site and all others like this are nothing more than a well informed couch potato portraying themselves as an experienced prepper/survivalist or what have you. It is very easy to be fake on the internet. It would be a very good thing if we could do this and all be who and what we claim to be, but I do not feel it would be all that it seems it would be.
P.S. Myself personally, I have not had any real practice with my skills for quite a long time. Due to health reasons my wife and myself would be more of a burden than anything. I have arthritis and am unable to do any type of labor or carry heavy loads. My wife's condition has her basically chained to a bathroom for 2-3 days at a time and also has bad knees. I am sure no one will want to "take care of us".

Nakadnu, Thank You for the reality check. Too often people forget that things aren't usually what they appear to be, especially people. When some of us honest and concerned ones get into the
heat of the moment' with our own mortality in the balance, we let our guard down, so to speak. I have always wanted to see the good in people but have the sense to know that most everyone is full of the BS & proceed accordingly. I am newer to this site but I have found so many ideas that I hadn't thought of yet and am very thankful that I came across this site. While you or your wife may not be able to do everything you would have before, your wisdom is priceless & I think THAT can help immeasurably! And, for the record, if you were my neighbor, I'd help you out the best I could when the SHTF, and that is NO B.S.!!!!! Again, I thank you for the wake up call, much appreciated.

Wont have to worry about internet posers since you will have to survive in order to make it to a potential outpost. the too many chiefs idea, don't take this the wrong way but your thinking like the "man" There does not have to be a leader in an organised group. depending on your skill set you could be the subject matter expert in your group so why not have a community of subject matter experts that acts like a counsel where the entire group has to agree on a decision. your still doing your own thing but you have support of a group for resources whatever they might be. people has a number of skill sets however there are some skills that you enjoy or able to use more than others. a community is also a way to learn new skills and pass them on.If someone steals from another they are giving up their resources and the community and are sent packing.

Unfortunately the Sheeple will bow to their master as soon as things go sideways!

This is what will happen in my neighborhood. I am (was) part of the neighborhood watch
program as a block captain. 28 houses on my street, 3 times I have passed out info sheets
about security, having a meeting, getting me their emergency info... A grand total of 5 families
have filled out the sheet and returned it to me ! I passed out an info sheet for a heads up before Christmas 10,
one reply ! Guess what ? 4 burglaries ! Stupid sheep ! Then they ask for help, I tell them a time and place, NO SHOWS !
EFFFFF YOU ! Some around me know that I have the gear, but they are the ones who have extracted theri heads from hind quarters.

It has been asked, what kind of TEOTAWKI Friend will I be?

I have got 2 words for the arrogant yuppie slime that drive past my house at 35+ miles an hour,
                      and they aint Happy Birthday.

I have a 3 fire fighters 2 cops, 3 deputy sheriffs and several prior service members that are aware that
are in my circle. We have a plan, I know their work schedules, their kids know me, passwords are set.
I have an 8000 sq ft warehouse 3 miles away, tilt up building, solid concrete. It stand 30 and has great
visability of the surrounding area. We have all contributed to a jump pack, we all have trucks and jeeps
                      for a rapid jump.

The sheep, they can all get bent

exactly and those are the people that will be left behind and I will not care. this world esp this country is made up of those that don't want to make it on their own and no long know how even if they wanted to and have become dependent on programs that provide for them. sounds like some good house cleaning

There are so many sidewalk comandos out there...it will be more like the gardner cleaning out the weeds when the SHTF...you almost gotta feel sorry for most of them, like my Grandfather used to say " if ignorance is bliss, those are some REAL happy folks "

I agree! As most, I have people (or should I say SHEEPLE) in my family who were all in when I started prepping, but now have changed their minds. Sadly, for them, when the shtf, I will already be with those who did choose to prepare & there won't be any waiver from that. I don't know what else to do, except encourage them to read ' The Bug Out'.

Specialist over specific areas of expertise, I feel, is an excellent idea within any community or government... However...
Without a leader, or leadership team, as well as written laws and guidelines your basically creating the framework for a communist/socialist government. Since the beginning of civilization, people have always looked for leadership among their perspective groups and communities, (especially when considering group defense and common law). Even at the "Family" level there is almost always someone who is considered "Head of the House" and is responsible, and accountable for descisions made. Most here already know this, but even a true Democracy is an exercise in futility and frustration, where very little if anything can ever get done. I feel that a true Republic like our forefathers invisioned, and created, will buy us another 200 years or so, until it corrupts itself again.

I see in your Avitar, the logo for "The Colony" TV series.
I watched both seasons, and even though it was a cheesey TV reality show, it was a prime example of what a lack of leadership can do to even a small group of people in a semi stressful environment.

I'm with Echo, in that I'm hoping for the government "RESET" switch. (somewhere around December 16 1791 would be nice)

Just my opinion and I'm usually wrong.
