The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. (waiting for attack)

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is m ore important than either.. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

    1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

    2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

    3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

    4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

    5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.

    6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'

    7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

    But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!' To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!' She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?' My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

Outstanding post. I like the one about the old man. I got a call to the hospital ER years ago in reference to an assault. When I got there, there was a 20ish black man lying on the table being stitched up. He had a gash on his neck that barely missed the main artery, a gash across his chest through which you could see his ribs, one on his arm and one on his leg. All stood open about a quarter of an inch. Feeling sorry for him I asked him what happened and he told me this story: I was at a bootleg joint and for no reason this old man jumped me and cut me. The poor guy was crying like a little girl. About this time I noticed a fellow officer in the emergency room. I asked him why he was there and he said he was taking a report on an old man that was jumped at a bootleg joint. I asked him if he minded if I talked to his victim and said no and pointed me to the room where he was. As I went into the room I saw an old man, late 60s early 70s lying on the table. He had some bruises, some scratches and scrapes and a bruise on his cheek that was swollen. The other thing that I noticed was that the old warrior had many scars from battles gone by. I asked him what happened and this was his story which was told with great humility: I was as a bootleg joint and there was this young boy there who has been picking on me for the past 2 weeks. I've always just ignored him. But this time when I went to the bathroom to take a piss this boy came up behind me and knocked me to the floor and started beating me and kicking me. Mister I hated to do it but I had to break out my old Buck knife and cut him to get him off of me. I wished him a speedy recovery and went back to talk to the young man in the other room. When I got there I told him "son, you messed with an old junk yard dog and got your ass took to school" and I walked out laughing. I don't know, but I bet that kid never messed with an old man again.

Sad fact is, in today's legal system, the old guy would be charged, and probably convicted of assault w/a deadly weapon, while the thug would be slapped with simple assault.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

            Add:

"Police are crime historians, they show up after the crime has been commited to document what happend"

Goes along with, "When seconds count, the Police are minutes away"

While your comments may be valid, from a certain standpoint, I believe they require a bit of equivocation...

Anyone who relies on another person - even the police - for his first line of defense, is, in truth, defenseless. I think it's up to the individual to apply his own obeyance of the law...the police have the responsiblity of keeping the peace, and enforcing the consequences of breaking the law.

Most police forces are overburdened in their duties by several factors:

              *they're out numbered...
              *they're out gunned...
*they're hindered by rediculous "criminal rights"...
*they are often too busy enforcing outmoded, redundant, or flat-out rediculous codes, when they could better spend their time investigating real crime against persons or property.
*they're widely hated on for doing their job.

              Just my $0.02

You both are correct. If we could always be there when the crime is committed there would be no crime. Also, for us to convict someone of say "stealing a car" we pretty much have to be standing on the hood when it happens. Yes, you have to protect yourself first and foremost, but please familiarize yourself with your state laws before you do. Some states have laws that say that if you can flee from a situation then that is what you must do, while other states have laws that state that a victim is not required to flee. Also, never, ever shoot an attacker in the back because this indicates that you were out of danger when you shot him and could also be used to show premeditation on some level. Remember that bad guy has more rights than you do right off the bat.
