I know there are many factors that play into the decision of bringing a child into the world. I have children and consider them a blessing and may be open to having one more, but my question is this...
How many of you, knowing how the world is today let it affect your decision by not having children?
Good question....and I think the first 7 to 8 years would be the decision maker.
In my experience....until they're around 8....they are essentially luggage....all be it precious luggage.
My baby girl is 6....and I would die for her in a second.....and if the truth be told.....sometimes I fear that could happen in a SHTF situation.
My boys are 9 and almost 12.....I would die for them in a second too.....but with their knowledge of Scouting....they'd probably give me a minute....if you get my meaning. They can also carry their own packs....know how to use a knife....can build a fire....and can shoot.
Now the baby is in training....she has attended more outdoor scouting events....that most our scouts....because the wife and I are Den Leader and Cub Master.....so she is picking up a lot of training by proxy.
The dynamic of having a child in a potentially bad....or survival situation....really lends itself to the "bug in" mentality.....just off the shear volume of stuff we have our kids grow accustom to.....newborns are especially a factor in this mentality....because they are a bit more fragile than say a 2 yr old. It'd be a true PITA to go on a 10 mile march with a kid in tow.
I personally don't think someone should let the condition of the world be too much of a factor in having kids....I tell my friends that it is the biggest PITA thing you will ever do....yet is the most rewarding thing you will ever experience.....you could build one of the great pyramids....but the only thing you really leave behind is your child.....
.....you just better realize that from the second you lay eyes on the child.....you will realize your life no longer belongs to you....it belongs to them....and you must do what it takes to keep them warm and fed...and safe.....and above all.....teach every skill you know....and encourage them to learn more than you.

I really like your response Echo2! Really puts things in perspective. I was thinking of a very pregnant woman when I voted. It would be very difficult for her for her carrying a child inside plus getting all the needed nutrients.
Now, caring for a small child or a baby would definately be tough, the crying at times when you need quiet could be trying I suppose. but also on the other hand it seems that if you're in a real shtf situation and the child had grown accustomed to it there would be intituative (sp) things going on like the crying for example.

Reading the poll, Id have to say, given the current world situations, yes, I probably would have a baby. I already have 4 so it is not likely :). IF we were in an actual SHTF situation, I would seriously try to not get pregnant. I wouldnt want to bring a baby into the world in a time when I couldnt properly, nutritionally take care of the infant (possibly)..I worry every day because I have 2 under 3. I think about "how far could I get on foot", "I cant outrun anyone".. "What about their cries"... its scary, BUT they are here, they are my whole life, and I would kill any MOTHER that ever tried to hurt them, even if that meant me loosing my life.. just the way it is! Ill never regret having my little ones.
My mom told me that she was afraid to have me because of the Cuban missile crises and the Vietnam War. My grandmother was worried about having kids because of WWll and my great grandmother was afraid to have kids because of the great depression and dust bowl. Bad thing have been on mans doorstep since the beginning of time and that will never change.

We just returned from an eight day trip to Disney World and between the carrying and pushing a stroller(she's 4) I could not imagine trying to bug out with her. My plan is always to bug in, but you never know what you may have to do. Now the wife has been talking about another. It worries me, but life has to go on. You can not base all decisions on what might happen...
