I've looked at lot online and most of the stuff I see doesn't have the same finished look as kydex. Here are the suggestions for a substitute I've found, milk jug, laundry soap jug, Tupperware storage tubs.
Anyone here have a good suggestion for a substitute.
You can make a 2 sided box from plywood and 2x4s....make it so it hinges on one side with good hinges......take builders pink or blue foam and fill the two sides....if you want one side flat....use plywood on one side interior.
now you have a box....big enough to put what ever you want to make inside....+a few inches around it....if in doubt....go bigger than you think you need. You should have a suitcase that when opened...has foam on both or at least one side....do not glue the foam BTW......
then Basically to thermo-form the kydex....you need to heat it up and make a fold....this edge will be the leading edge of your "whatever".....the heat it back up and have your "whatever ready to go.....when the plastic gets to the recommended temp....pull it out of the oven and lay it in the box opened....position "whatever" in there with seam positioned accordingly....fold over.....close box quickly ( clamp as needed).....foam will crush against plastic...and softly form it to "whatever".....let cool...remove....shape as you wish.
If you are making a holster for a gun....you'll want to have a space in the rear of the holster to tension it....cut a piece of foam to to allow for space in the under profile of the gun....place it with the gun...in the plastic.
All the fasteners and rivets are available online....look for "sex bolts"....or at hardware store....you can use small fuel line hose to make squishy spacers for tension adjust.
Live like you'll die tomorrow, learn like you'll live forever.
plastic is a hobby of mine....I've made a bunch of molds for casting.....and I'm building a vacuume form table now....if you don't know what vacuume forming is....google it....and the wheels will start turning....they are fun.
