does anyone have a thought on local militias

my thoughts on a militia is it is local peopole protecting each other from outside forces. i've traced my family back to 1692 our family joined a militia in 1742 to protect the settlers in shenandoah valley area. they helped clear and build houses for the familys there. So in my thoughts on a militia is people getting together protecting and helping your fellow man aganist any outside force trying to take our God given rights to freedom give to us bye the constituion.

I totally agree with the dea of people helping people WITHOUT THE TINTERFERENCE of the government!
I am of a mind that each state should take care of itself and that government should be this little entity that is used when necessary and put back in the box until needed again.

I myself would like to join or lead a militia, but would not. I'll use my Tea Party situation as an example why. I am a very active Tea Party member and help lead the local group. Many of them go to rally's all over the country, but I work too much to go to DC, but when a local rally comes up I still do not participate. One reason is the stigmata that comes from the media that you are a racist if you are part of the group. I am a manager with an enormous company and all I need is for one of my black or hispanic employees to turn on the TV and there I am at some rally. Now I don't want to be some wuss, but my job supports my family and I can not risk it. I think if your name turns up affiliated with one of these militia groups many people immediatly think domestic terrorist or something like that. Now maybe not so much in NC or MO, but here in Chicago, I would probably get strung up(or at least they would try).

I also think it is not a good way to stay below the radar. With my Tea Party group I only use my first name and initial for everything. Of course if the are photographing plates in the parking lot.... I figure my name is on enough lists because of my love of firearms, I do not need more IMO.

The people themselves as a state have to come together under common believes (constitution and bill of rights, etc.) to make a viable militia. And in that sense have to voice the common interests of the people to the existing government.

I am not debating the viability issue. The purpose of a militia is not to voice opinion or effect change. That is done by something called voting. And last time I checked getting to the booth doesn't require camo or shooting targets. :D

I wouldn't see any problems in starting a new unit with in the state militia, I would first talk to the local commander so they don't feel that you are steping on their toes.

This is part of my point. Why would I need to consult another civilian about a desire to protect my fellow citizens? Unless there is some intention to make a power grab when it all goes down there are no 'toes' to step on.

Just be sure they are not tied in with a radical group somehow. Take Missouri for instance, Missouri has some really cool militias, but they also have some very radical militias, to the point they are on the governments radar. Some are even considered domestic terrorists. Even though a majority of them are all bark, no bite. I would suggest to start your own group and don't name it. Just a bunch of like minded people getting together to help each other. JMO

We have, what appears to be, a really good group here in NC that are focused on disaster preparedness, educating the public, and offering aid to emergency personel during and after disasters. I've gone round and round with myself about joining.
I see a great value in having a constitutionally led organization with a chain of command and foundation that is fully operational BEFORE society falls apart.
The one and only drawback for me, is that when the shoe falls, I need to be with my family, not two counties over pulling security for an undermanned local sheriff, or filling sand bags at the coast.
I guess I'm looking for something more along the lines of a "beefed up" neighborhood watch program myself.
I'm still on the fence about the NC Rangers though. They really do seem to be a cut above the stereotypical Militia group.

hmmm.. Like I said I can't speak for all, but I can definately say ours is not government controlled. I'm not going to 'hate' on you because you have an opinion but my believe is the 'militia' or the people themselves is what makes them well regulated. State militias are government controlled and are either called 'Well Regulated' or 'The National Guard'. These groups are neither. In a SHTF situation they would be the first people to avoid IMO.

Hi Kentuckyshiner. I can't speak for all state militias but ours up here is a good one in my opinion. Montanas is based out of Noxon, Montana and they are truly patriots. They do not preach 'gloom and doom' all the time but are well informed and objective as much as they can be. They are not 'extremists' as the media tries to portray all militias. Our leaders do travel across the nation to speak publicily and try to fight politically the injustices we seem to see everyday. Although the budget for any militia is limited, Montanas do sell books, preparedness supplies and other legal information to help supply revenue for the continued battle for the peoples rights that was bestowed to us by our founding fathers. I have been looking into this for a while now and have come to the conclusion that some groups have really good intentions . now finding a local group that hasnt went underground is a different story. I presonally believe that they go hand and hand with prepping. most group from what i can tell taylor towards just military style training with some frist aid but that seems to be about it. now my local militia seems ton not need new members. not true of all though. I was wondering what most our some of my fellow preppers think of them. would you join or not? I went as far as looking at starting my own unit here in central kentucky. Still just in the thoughts page though.:confused:
