Regarding "Global Warming"

It seems that the older I get the less I know. That being said. From what I can see the world was here before man evolved out of sludge and the world will be here well after man has killed himself off. The only thing I can hope for is that any change that comes while me and mine are here is I will have some readiness for.

Not to be picky TacSKS but the geological record shows that at one time the CO2 % was much much higher than it is now but that was before there were any higher life forms on the Earth. But anyway check out my old post entitled SUVs melted the icecaps in the Middle Ages!!! it has a brief and obviously inaccurate timeline( overexaggerated for the purpose of makikng the point).

You are absolutely right--I stand corrected. Long before recorded history the atmosphere was very different than it is now. The earliest atmosphere was composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, merely trace gases in today's atmosphere. Originally there wasn't oxygen in any form(02, CO, CO2, 03, etc). I think it all goes to show how much the earth changes with or without us.

Basically that is what I was trying to say. You put it in much better words than I did. I am a smart%$& by nature and my sarcastic comments don't always come across right. Thanks for saying what I was thinking.

My personal belief is that we humans are not adding to the CO2 in the air to cause pollution, instead, we are removing the vegitation that converts CO2 into energy and oxygen.

So, let the EPA, Department of the Interior, Federal Forest Service, and other such government agencies build more 24 story buildings by removing a huge portion of low-growth deciduous vegitation next to a large waterway (so the office employees have a nice view of what they're pretending to save), pave the surrounding area of the building with highly polluting tar-based asphalt, and dictate to us how we're destroying the environment by driving a car.

With a background in Environmental Engineering, my moderately liberal education stressed that global warming is an impending man-made disaster which must be thwarted. I'm expected to be super concerned about global warming. But they also taught me to look at the facts and ignore the hype. These are the facts as I see them:

Fact = There is more CO2 in the atmosphere than any other time in history. The geologic record shows this.
Fact = The concentration of different gases in the atmosphere fluctuates over time, and this fluctuation directly coincides with temperature variation. More CO2=hotter. Less=cooler
Fact = At this moment in time we happen to be at a high point for CO2 concentration. But what is to say that this isn't natural variation with a small additional portion added by man.
Fact = No current or near future techniques offer any hope of reducing reducing global CO2 levels. Any potential emission reductions will be negated by our rapidly growing global population. Population grows much faster than we could ever reduce individual emission.

In my mind, the only realistic strategy for reducing CO2 emmission is to severly curb our growing population. To reduce pollution we must reduce the number of people creating pollution.

But then again, what's the point? This period of global warming is part of a natural cycle of warming, to be followed by a much more problematic period of global cooling. (Do a little research on the "little iceage" that hit europe during the dark ages) Nothing we do can change the natural cycles of the earth. To think so is overestimating our influence and capabilites as humans. We are a small mostly powerless species with no control over the weather or mother nature. At this time we are no more in control of the weather then the dinosaurs.


P.S. Looking at the unsustainable population explosion has me much more concerned about the struggle for limited resources and the inevitable conflict to come. I believe we are heading towards another World War, and it will be fought over water.

Global warming reminds me of the old days when our ancestors sacrificed virgins and captured enemy warriors to appease the gods and bring the rains.
Perhaps we could all do a variation of the rain dance.
If we danced naked with flowers in our hair all at the same time it would bring about the end of global warming.
Of course we will need some celebrity spokespersons who will gain fame and fortune by promoting our cause for it to work properly.

My family is from Montana. My Grandmother and I talked about the long-term weather some years back. When she was in school, she remembers frequent blizzards all winter long. As she aged they got less and less frequent until about 15 years ago, they had a couple of winters with no blizzards.

The trend is now going the other direction.

I was really looking forward to global warming. I am sick and tired of these Montana winters. I am sure someone will figure out how the volcanic erution is somehow a direct result of human activity. Don't worry about Mr Gore, he will find (create) a new pet cause to write a book about.

In the last 10 days, I've read two articles telling us that the sun has been quiet (where have I heard THAT before?) so we are in for "several" decades of - wait for it - you ready? GLOBAL COOLING.

As anyone with half a brain knows, cooling will be far more damaging than the 2 - 3 deg warming that they were predicting (and never showed up). The volcano will exacerbate the issue.

Don't know whether to laugh or cry. I do know that I hope Al Gore goes flat freaking broke!
