  • Yellowstone National Park, is it true?

Ok people, I need to hear what you all think. I've been hearing Yellowstone's volcanoe is close to erupting. Whats your veiw on this. I f what I read is true, we are in trouble. Last year Yellowstone had a little over 500 tremors, this year so far a little over 1000. The biggest is 3.8, and they say if it goes to a 4.0 it will blow. Your veiw on this please.

I vote Yes. Yellowstone is a definite threat. Just the increased tremor activity, and water temperatures over the past two years seems to indicate an unavoidable eruption. When? ... is the question. Scientist say that Yellowstone is 40,000 years overdue, so what's another day, month, year, decade, or century?
From what I've read though, there's no prepping for this scenario. If it goes, as they fear that it might, most of North America will be buried in ash, as we're plunged into an extended volcanic winter.

IMHO, No use in even worrying about it.

I think most of the data is theoretical hype and conjecture, but we'll know when (not if) it happens...

Ive heard and seen alot about Yellowstone, the fact that its the biggest volcano caldera in the world should give anyone pause. Its definitely still active, as to weather or not it would blow with a 4.0 tremor no one can say ( I don't think anybody was monitoring it the last time she went off) but small occasional tremors relieve the pressure, lots of small ones are better than one huge one!
They say she is long overdue, a major eruption from a vol that big could throw enough ash high into the atmosphere and blot out the sun for months, long enough to kill most of the vegetation on earth and lower the global temps to sub-freezing for long enough to really screw things up.
They say shes 40,000 years over due for an eruption, well I don,t think vols keep regular office hours, they blow when they blow. If she goes off in our lifetime that just means we're unlucky as hell.
Volcano or rogue asteroid / comet, some fool with a nuke who knows. But if we gotta go might as well go out with a bang, just hope to bump into some friendly's in the dark (keep lotsa flashlight batters and warm socks on hand!)
        Hope you all are well!

Well like they said according geologists the Yellowstone caldera is way overdue for an explosion. This is based on an AVERAGE of the amount of time between past eruptions. Some erutions have been rather close together when considered geologically while others were even further apart than the impending one. Morgans is right in that lots of small tremors are better than one big one. But even WORSE is when there are NO tremors, that means that there is no release of the pressure. It is a bad sign when there are no tremors because that means that the pressure is buildiing up and will more than likely release in a single large explosion.

It will probably happen sooon.... from a geological perspective that means in the next 10,000 or so years...

I was just there this past June 09" and its kinda creepy driving around on top of the worlds largest volcano. Other than that, its really awesome. I got some really good Photos of buffalo grazing about 50 ft from the road, with young calfs bounding about in play. When it blows, there is gonna be alot of roasted buffalo........mmmmm, makes me hungry

If Yellowstone goes, we're in trouble. There would be nowhere to hide from it. When the Siberian Traps supervolcano erupted 251 million years ago, it erupted constantly for a million years and eradicated 95% of all life on Earth. There was a thriving ecosystem with numerous species, both large and small, that inhabited our planet before the dinosaurs. Their demise is what gave the opportunity for the dinosaurs to arise. In my long-winded way, if it happens, there really isn't a way you can plan for an Extinction Level Event. I focus on preparing for those things that can be prepared for, civil unrest, weather, etc.

Yeah that would be bad. Of course, if Yellowstone just blew for a week or two it would change the world dramatically. Not to mention, all the fault lines in the country that would bump and shudder. And what about other volcanoes, who is to say that activity of that magnitutde wouldnt make others start spewing as well. After all, the west coast is on the edge of the ring of fire. Chances are that volcano's all over the world might start getting up and talking?? And then there are the earthquakes that go along with that kind of massive energy, so kiss california goodbye.

This caldera was discovered when a scientist noticed that the trees on on end of the lake were dying, the investigation led him to find the tress were drowning because the ground on one end of the lake was rising pushing the water to inundate lower land on the opposite end. The reason why the land was rising was the caldera was filling with magma.

It is a real hazard, the WHEN remains a guess.

Depressing if you think on it too long. If it does happen in our lifetime (and we survived the erruption), all we could do is hope the ash settled within 2 years or less. I want to believe one could survive with enough stored food, a good well, seeds, good plans, and skills to really get to work when the sun came back. Really gets you thinking... especially folks relying on solar for power. No sun for years and damn cold... wonder if there would be enough wind to generate useful amounts of power in a volcanic winter? Could enough food be grown indoors or underground w/grow lights? I hear they are power hungry devices. Then, what about live stock. Unsheltered and unmanaged live stock would be gone.

Regardless, it would reset the clock for the human race (if it survived). Me... I believe humans would endure. All the extinctions to date were of lessor creatures... very few with knowledge of tools, and none with knowledge of science. I think some humans would make it. Society, as we know it today... not a chance.

The large excavations going on around the US... I don't have personal research, but I've seen enough to to believe they are there, being built, and/or stalked as we speak. Wonder if Yellow Stone is one of the contingencies they're planning for and/or expecting.

The way the earthquakes and eruptions are going on around the world now, you never know.
We should be able to survive it. Most of us anyway not too close to it. But most of us are too lazy to stock up or prepare for disaster and will just sit around and wait for the gov to bail us out.

I was watching a program on the History Channel on this exact subject and they say that the volcano erupts at Yellowstone on the arevage of every 600,000 years and it has been over that since the last one.
It is a ticking timebomb and they showed a scenario of what would happen when, not if, it blows and it will not be pretty.
