  • Earth without electricity

Did anyone see the 2012 special last night. It went over several scenarios that COULD happen and not just at the end of the Mayan calendar. The one that caught my attention was the effect of a giant solar flare that could hit the Earth head-on. The outcome was a disruption of most everything electrical...including ALL power grids from the electromagnetic upheaval. The Great Minds seem to think that this would take 4 to 10 YEARS to come out of.

UPDATE.... I'm sorry for the mislead...this special was on television...Discovery Channel

Idiocy on your part should not create an emergency on my part!

We rarely go to an actual theater, to see a movie, but Dh and I did go last weekend to see 2012. At first it was sticker shock, $7 for matinee, last time we went it was $4.50, anyway the movie was VERY action packed. Some one said either here or another forum, that the character that Woody Harlson plays is much like I think many survivalist would be doing. Some of the action packed scenes are pretty far out, but they keep you on the edge of your seat! I won't say anymore, except it was in the end worth the $14 to see it.:D

2012 was prophecized by the Mayans true, but didnt they also consider them selves masters of time? They didnt even outlast or master the Spanish Conquistadors, well the diseases that they brought anyhow. 2012 is probably going to be another Y2K rember that? But I bet it makes for some good story lines and special effects. I saw the previews thats about as far as I will get probably.

I'm looking forward to seeing it. I love disaster flicks and this one looks like a big one.
As far as living without electricity, I think it might happen for a variety of reasons. As long as it happens all over, I'm fine with it.

Yes a solar emission could easily knock out power, in fact it happens sometimes on a smaller scale every once in a while. I remember one happening in Canada back when I was a kid. (EDIT: Found out it was in Quebec in 1989.) The reason a larger emission, i.e. coronal mass ejection, could knock out all power is because all the power grids are so interconnected now that if one has a major failure for some reason it will bring down those connected to it. Get alternative power, it's worth it whether the grid goes down or not. I'm a big fan of wind turbines especially VAWT's, solar is always good too.

Can't speak for 2012 disaster theories, but I have looked into EMF burst (and others) from the sun extensively.

                    It's not 'if' its When.

                    http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2...superstorm.htm

October 2003 we were grazed by one. The Aurora borealis was seen in Wisconsin.
We barely missed the big one. Literally.

Historically it's happened before. 1859 to be exact. The worst damage then was the fledgling telegraph services were burned out.

In 1994, we received a glancing blow that killed two major communications satellites.
The total effects of that one were unknown. However, those of you that were alive with vehicles with older batteries probably found yourself replacing those batteries. Some of the folks with faulty insulation and or grounding, found themselves replacing their pc's and some electronics.

Bottom line: It's not without precedence.

Now what do you do about it???

You build a faraday cage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage

You also keep a store of battery acid, or learn how to make it, while keeping 12 volt batteries dry.

Key elements of electronics you wish to keep (such as everything you need to fire your car/truck/GTFOOT vehicle. (Get the F*** out of town).) in it.

There are many other things you need to do.
Again, your mind is your best tool. Treat it right, and it will keep you alive.

I remember a movie awhile back I think it was called Escape from LA at the end the hero Snake Pliskin types in a code that is sent to the satelites to knock out the worlds power grid. Without electricity we are in the 1800's again.

Of all the things that people are worried about for 2012, I think this is the only plausible one. The power grid is antiquated and society is so dependent on it. The solar cycle should be at peak in 2012 if it follows the cycle that has been observed over the last 20 cycles or so. But the ramp-up seems to be unexpectedly sluggish this time around, maybe it will not be so strong of a peak.
