Discovery Channel is presenting a new reality show formed on the basis of a catastrophic global phenomenon that has caused most of civilization to die off.

The link above is a trailer for the show. I implore you to check it out.

Whoa! I don't watch TV, usually. May have to give that a look!

Thanks. Just watched a couple short clips from the net. Yes having a small group made up of a doctor, engineer, etc etc would be wonderful, but in reality it may look more like a few potheads, pacifists, twiddlethumbs then thier representitives. Interesting to watch irregarless. I did notice nobody had a firearm or decent knife for security. That of course would be un PC.

        Of course.

Did you see the HUGE guy that was an invader? How would you drive him off without putting a hurt on him? Ask nicely? Don't think the show would allow a 2X4 to the back of his head.

Duh, I just answered my own question. Here you go:
Discovery Channel has announced The Colony, a new reality series that will isolate a group of participants for two months and require them to create a sustainable society inside an abandoned warehouse, will premiere Tuesday, July 21 at 10PM ET/PT.

This could be interesting. Sort of a Survivor but played out in the city. I love this stuff so will plan on watching the first few episodes to get a feel for the show. If it is junk, then goodbye to it.

Being one of the newbies on this site I so far have been a little imtimidatedto add anything of value other of support. Im a 65 year old man trying to retire and relocate ,Im out of shape with medical issues but am here to support this community and my children and grand kids .I am learning everyday and accumulating more and more supplies and equiptment .I am paying attention to the volumes of need to read books and am doing so . As I get more comfortable with all of you I will be adding more and more I have spent my life selling welding supplies so if any one needs info just ask.I log on daily and pay attention to the thing I read .thank you for all the different info keep it coming ,it is not being ignored .I am an experienced wood worker and ex carpenter and a decent handyman . so there is lots of info in this head of mine waiting for the right questions just respond to dozerwayne and I will try to be of service

DozerWayne, you Sir are walking breathing knowledge! Life experience trumps a lot of book knowledge in my opinion. Think of things your good at and how they could/would apply to survival and rebuilding. Then pick a specific topic or even something like a list of hand tools you'd recommend for helping to rebuild without power.

I for one would read your posts indepth! Thanks for being here, no need to feel intimidated we all started somewhere. I wish there were sites like this when I started.

Please keep reading and learning. Feel free to jump in where you can even if it's just looking for clarification on something.:D
Well, for me, the action is the juice.....I'm in.

major propaganda piece - social conditioning. even have the homeland security advisor on it just to make it official. not that i wouldn't watch this, but it's just another program to mentally pre-condition the masses to accept these realities. to BELIEVE in it and indeed play it out. my main question is WHY would anyone shack up in a warehouse in LA? that's no colony - that's a tomb. and where's the millionaire and the movie star? :)

Probably true but I watched to see how people handled the situation. a) What did they do first, b) what did they do wrong, c) what should they have been doing, d) did they do anything right? Here are just a few observations:

                            1. You can probably expect to find a diverse group of survivors each with different skill sets and personalities. So far so good.

                            2. Found a secure place to hunker down for immediate survival and protection. Any port in the storm and the warehouse is just as good as anyplace given the artificiality of the show.

                            3. Found what food and water they could on the first day. So far so good and used their brains to realize they needed to filter the water and boil it before drinking. Should have continued the search for more supplies during hours of daylight (see number 5 below).

                            4. Secured their perimeter. Problem was they revealed themselves by responding to the "knocks" on the door and running around with the flashlight on and yelling at the top of their lungs. Should have hunkered down and kept quiet. Definitely no flashlights when intruders come knocking on the door. Now the "outsiders" know they are there. They will come back, guaranteed.

                            5. Should have inventoried skill sets to determine who was suited for what tasks. Then should have divided themselves to accomplish the tasks. Division of labor. They showed one small snippet of this happening but it didn't reveal anything to the viewer.

You can probably name many more.
                            As Zombie Axe would say...

I think the compliment is completely arrogant of themselves. The "security" guy seems to have way too much testosterone, and is probably the first to start crying. So far, the show is actually making me angry.

Yay, they can work together...big whoop. Notice there were only 3 people who were thinking, and the others were just gobs of unneccessary protoplasm bumping into each other? The old man came up with the idea of the filter, and he was the one who punched the holes in the garbage can.

Also, they did not have to go through the death of a loved one, or watch their friends die, or even walk through town seeing corpses in the streets.
