I think one of the most heart wrenching moments for me was before the public execution of the thieves, during John's speech: "Our world has changed..., but this is still America. I want to believe it is still America."
It is my hope to never face this situation, though it is bound to happen at some point in time if all h*ll breaks loose.
The run on the pharmacies is a given, to me. I hope people have sense enough not to be there if/when chaos reigns.

Lady Banjo,
The saw dust in the bread items was common during WWI and WWII in Germany as I have read anyway.

5 cups of water
8 level tsp. sugar
1 level tsp. salt
Mix, and let them drink as much as they want.
I can't guarantee it as I've never used it.

The lack of insulin and people dying off from that was so hard for me to come to terms with, regarding the book. :(

It talks about sawdust in the bread, too.
During the Great Depression, my father-in-law was a young boy. His dad was a pig farmer. His dad was told by the authorities that he could not slaughter any hogs. They WILL confiscate for the "good of the community".
