I'd like to discuss this book with those who have read it. If you haven't, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. I'll post my thoughts on it this afternoon. What are your thoughts?

I have read it and would love to discuss it!
One thing I would suggest is that you consider reading Lights Out by HalfFast free online. The reason for this is that it is a similar scenario, but they are more detailed about growing things and how they manage.
Loved the book, totally freaked me out. My husband feels that 1) any scenario that disrupts the supply chain and power grid would result in a similar situation. 2) a single EMP blast won't cause that much damage.
but instead, it might still cause a major break in the grid or supply line at some point.
I think I agree with him on this. It really doesn't matter what causes the disruption.

WARNING! One Second After scared the crap out of me, and I don't scare that easy."If Howdy Doody runs against him, I'm voting for the puppet." - SkyOwl's Wife, 2012

here is one link through Survival Monkey: http://survivalmonkey.com/Lights%20Out.htm
I think what scared me most about One Second.., was the almost real time of the sequence of events. His realization of what had happened, the building of their "military", the old folk's home, the mental breakdowns, and the golf course grave yard. I lived in that area for a while, so I know the basic local....it made both my husband and I think in a whole different way. My husband has gradually been getting on board with the whole self sufficient thing cause it made sense to him, but after reading "Dies the Fire", One Second After" and Patriots, he's completely changed his stance on things and is pushing me to prep a lot harder! He's run into a couple of like minded people while working out of town and he's really come about face on everything. (I couldn't be happier)...things just made so much sense at what can and probably WILL happen.

Good to see the book getting some attention.... it gives you many insights as to the fragile state in which we currently live. If it happens we are set back a thousand years or so and most of us don't have the knowledge needed to effectively survive in that era. Most of us here are equipped with the idea and just having some information on D.I.Y. stuff put us miles ahead of the crowds. I believe VooDoo said that he believes a economic collapse is the scenario he see's, I believe, he is right about this. The economy will coolapse and then as we are week from the administrations defense cuts we will be hit by a EMP strike/s and the proverbal FAT LADY will be singing a tune from the middle ages.Waitnc

I tend to agree with VooDoo Waitnc. I see people taking wheelbarrows full of money to the store that has only a few items on the shelves and coming out with a loaf of bread. Zimbabwea all over again. It is a truth for them, I wonder how long it will be a truth for us here. Makes a person wonder. I'm glad we have our heads on right and are at least trying to make some sense out of this by preparing ourselves and our families. I'm glad you all are here. It makes me feel better just knowing I'm not alone in this. I may be alone here but the mindset is where it's at.Your opponet got stronger today, did you?

Okay, I've read the posts and found it time to chime in.
The son, who lives in SLC, has been conversing with Wife about all the financial stuff and what to do with the 200.5K, formerly a 401K. She still talks with him about the issues. He does not keep any money in the bank and buys precious metals when possible. We have to time this right to withdraw the funds and convert to something that will have some sort of value after TSHTF. I invest my energies in keeping us safe from the wandering hordes, aka zombies, that do nothing but follow the Obama.
I am currently in another novel, one I have read before, call Footfall by Niven and Pournelle. After that comes Patriots and Lucifers Hammer. Eventually I will get to One Second After. I look forward to conversing, probably too late by the time I get there, but Wife is a very good listener.
Enjoy and I will catch up sooner or later. As Zombie Axe would say...
"Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty."

Well, (my husband, by the way see the economy as the big factor), in Lights Out, it was an EMP that caused the mess, but they had a bit of time while the government hemmed and hawed....they took turns going to the store and getting the daily allowed amount of food until the whole neighborhood had managed to stock up, one guy had a generator to run his well and the whole neighborhood got to come by once a day to fill up jugs...they set up outdoor cooking facilities, and for a while the government struggled to make things appear normal so as not to panic people. The interesting thing was how the gangs worked, as in One Second After. This to me, is a very big danger...gas stealing was a big thing. There was't an epidemic in many areas, so they didn't have that to contend with, but nutty people abounded! lol
In Patriots: Surviving the Coming collapse, the economy tanked and caused outages and shortages...when trucks couldn't afford to transport coal to the power plants, the grid went down in places, leaving a trail of ruin. The aluminium plant stopped in the middle of a run and the aluminium cooled in the machines, ruining them. The people's water wouldn't pump through their pipes and they paniced. Peaople set up road blocks to ambush others for gas and supplies. Gangs siphoned gas from vehicles and ran on motorcycles and ATV's and stole and robbed. In some places, they took slaves/prisoners. No epidemic, but med care wasn't available either...no gas, no generators. etc. So it doesn't matter, with us so dependant on transport and power, EMP, Katrina type disaster, nuke or economy...when TDHTF, it will have the same basic result. That's the main thing I am learning.
An economy might give you more time and ease you into a survival situation, but the chain of events will be basically the same.

I'm in chapter 8 of Lights Out and one of the guys in it says this about Paranoia.
"paranoia was…the rational reaction to the realization of reality"
I don't care what people think, paranoid I may be and yep, don't feel bad at all about it. I'm early on in the book but I'm catching up.Your opponet got stronger today, did you?
