The U.S. Census people just came by here. I was outside smoking my turkish blend and up walk 2 ladies "as nice as apple pie" and started asking me questions about the farmhouse. I just looked at them like I didn't understand English I'm sure and Jake, my Sheltie, started the Rabid Dog barking bit and growling. LOL She then handed me a slip of paper that said I must by Federal Law answer the questions. So I said, "Yep" when she asked me if that was the address and if I could confirm it. I said "Yep" again. The other lady said, "it's a lovely morning isn't it"? I said "Yep" again. Now I know that I've never been accused of having a "Sunny Disposition" and well, I didn't want to ruin my reputation so I just took her little piece of paper, grabbed Jake my killer Sheltie and went in the house. Snubbing my Turkish blend on the way.
    Hmmm.......maybe I was a bit rude......just sayin'

One day it will be a "chip" that Federal law dictates we must comply to...
I would feel a lot better about the census if it were done on a community level, then reported up through the county>state then fed level. Someone coming to my door quoting federal law about a head count gives me a real uneasy feeling.

It was a bit unnerving. She actually asked if she could go up on my porch and take a address something or other. She had some kind of device and I just looked at her and said, "do I have a choice?" She said, well, maybe I can get it from here. She stepped up on the first step as I watched her and then back down. I was not pleased with this but I felt that I had no choice in the matter. This is the same feeling I get every time I read the news about what's going on in our country. Helpless.

I have never heard of a device like that. Scary and I don't like it.

          Unswydd,

The last time I had a visit from the Census for the year 2000, I just answered that there were two people living here and didn't answer anything else. I figured that was all the information that the U.S. Government required under the Constitution, since the Census was originally for the purpose of counting heads to create Congressional seats and districts. I never got a visit back from the Census, so no biggie for me.

In fact, no one was at home when the Census Taker came to visit, so they just left their form on the door, so that is one way to deal with Census Takers or any other unwanted door-knockers. Make sure you are too busy to take visitors.

Funny thing. She never asked who or how many lived here. I thought that a bit odd too. I couldn't avoid them....I was outside scrapping paint off the back porch smoking. I would rather it be like that tho. I don't want them even on my porch knocking on my door. That's just a bit too close for even me.

OK, that lady was there to only make sure that the address was correct and to take a GPS reading of your home (sometimes called "painting"). The census doesn't start until next year, so other than coorrecting any address issues, they have no right to ask questions at this time.

We are required by law to participate in the census, but there are somethings that we do not have to answer, and we certainly don't have to do it for anything other than the real census.

I believe, by law the only question you have to answer is, "How many people live here of voting age?"

But I could be wrong. Is all they get from me, anyway.

The only question they asked is "is this the correct address". and "confirm". She did take a GPS reading of the house too. I guess.

Here is a link to the Census and what you have to do and what they need for info and why.
They have 2 forms, the long form and the short form. I suggestthat you only answer the short form if you can. (JMO)
