I just got 2 books that I would recomend to everyone who beleaves there is a coming collapse. The first is call PATRIOTS by James Wesley Rawles a former US army intelligence officer and edits the survialblog.com. This book is a novel about a group of people who have planed and prepared. It takes you on there journey after the shit hits the fan but in the story are the very things you need to be ready. It is worth every penny $16.55 on amazon. The other is called a Crisis Preparedness Handbook and the title says it all, it was $19.95

I have to drive from drilling rig to drilling rig
So i do the books on tape (CD actually) and have been enjoying the heck out of Jerry Aherns "The Survivalist" series. Very entertaining. I have also been listening to Ryder Stacy's "The Doomsday Warrior" series. Both are Sci-Fi type books, and Doomsday Warrior gets pretty cheesey at times, but all and all you get some pretty darn good tips in an fun fashion. I am actually thinking about selling my Doomsday Warrior #'s 1-10 here on the swap shop section, but will have to sleep on it a bit more. I am an avid reader, but with Americans love of the automobile, we have to keep the petrol flowing and I cannot take time to read much anymore. The CD's are a good alternative. I think that a company called Graphic Audio sells them online, but I get mine whenever I stop to get gasoline for the pickup. I suggest listening to them in order. Last I checked there were over 100 of the Doomsday Warrior series, and at $20.00 a pop, that is a good bit of dough. However, $20.00 gets you 4-6 hours of decent listening. Enough to get me between a couple of rigs.Last edited by Rustyshakelford; 09-10-2008, 06:58 PM.

I own a copy of both of these and rate "Crises Preparedness" MUCH higher. Having your essentials in order is a higher priority than fiction but I am a bit of a stick in the mud there so do what works for you.
Having said that if you have the money wait till the next edition of Rawles' "Patriots" comes out to get his updated index of equipment. The writing is about on par with the Doomsday series but in some ways worse by the cramming of tactical/equipment/planning tips into the narrative.
The best advise he gives is on steel shutters for a retreat along with a reinforced door plans. I only wish he gave more details on both but supposedly he does if you poney up the few hundred dollars for a consultation.
For my money the best author on retreats is Joe Skousen. If I could afford more than the photocopy version I would own the "Secure Home". Amazing plans and explanations of small (affordable) bullet/invasion/storm/fire resistant homes. Worth every penny if I could afford to build a retreat. (mental note become wealthy!)

Got another good book for you....
If I don't use this thing at least once a week, I'm either not working, or in a coma. I even keep a copy in my BoB, in case SHTF, it contains knowledge on damn near everything from carpentry to navigation; geometry and voltage calcs; to knot tying and travel distances.
At about 7 bucks at any hardware store, it's a must-have....IMHO.

Ok, here's one I predict will generate some discussion. It's called "Lights Out" and is 600+ pages of SHTF fiction written by a guy who frequents http://AR15.com. It explores some of the realities of societal collapse and what it takes to come through it.
You can read it online or download the .pdf by accessing the "And the complete work by Halfast" link at the bottom.

One of our new members reminded me of a great SHTF aftermath book.....Prayers for the Assassin, by "Robert Ferrigno."
You can read a good synopsis and a few pages of the book on Amazon at the above link...."I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." -Thomas Jefferson

The "give me liberty" part is original Biggy, though. ;)"I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." -Thomas Jefferson

I currently keep 4 distinctly similar books in my BoB - right now I'm reading one though - "Special Forces Survival Guide" by Chris McNab, "Wilderness Survival" by Mark Elbroch and Mike Pewtherer, the U.S. Army survival guide, and "The Complete Wilderness Training Manual" by Hugh McManners.
All 4 of these books cover the basics, but they do it in different ways. IMHO having multiple opinions on the same action could be the difference between life and death."Reject the basic assumptions of civilization, especially the importance of material possessions." "The things you own end up owning you"-Tyler Durden
