  • I am a daywalker now.......

I have of recent been transferred over to a dayshift job.

I am becoming aware that this is a significant change after years and years of being on the back shifts...

Not having to contend with as much traffice....or parking issues...also fewer people around on the back shifts.

I am now rethinking my preps and or survival strategies........applications..with this new shift..

I have prepared myself a new locker at work into which I am bringing some of my prep/survival stocks...a bit at a time.....as I had on my olde work location.

I am having to deal with more people....not only on the job but off work as well.....traffic, crowds..parking ..et al..

It is sort of a new awakening now after being shielded from this daily chaos...so to speak for years and years by being on the back shifts....in particular the graveyard shift.

I keep thinking to myself......"You folks do this every day???!!!"

Am I going to be able to adapt....make the change....survive if you will???

In a manner of speaking i have been protected from all this daily chaos...by being on the back shifts.

Nonetheless....I am now a daywalker.....and it is slow going ...trying to make the adjustment...one day at a time.....one day at a time..

I've read some people are better suited to work nights than days and love it. Other people can't handle working nights at all. I've never worked nights.

Once I worked 06:00 to 16:30 or more and 8 or more on Saturday. You'd be amazed how long the brakes on a vehicle last when no other vehicles were on the road. As there was no interruptions, Saturday was the most productive 8 hours of the week.

Why were Saturdays so productive? No interruptions, no meetings, no nothing, but do the job your paid to do.

Agree.....that is one thing I like about the back shifts for the most part....more Indians so to speak and less chiefs...
less interference on the job....if....that is if you are good at your job.

Some of what we do ....is 6 pm to 6 am....12 hours..once we start we have to get things in a safe condition...by procedure....and cannot stop ..once we start... very unusual...to have to do this.

If you cannot finish in 12 hours you are relieved on the job ...individually by qualified people.....and it continues until the job can procedurally be put in a safe condition.

The Force...can become very very weak...about 4 am in the morning.....and we have to stay frosty....awake and aware...

For the most part..I like the back shifts for when I am not working..I like to get things done and be off while most are at work.

Never was a big crowd type of person. Big crowds make me uneasy....so too lots of traffic.

Reckon I never was the social butterfly type...my circles are very small by choice.

Oh...verily agree about the brakes lasting.

Riding my scooters about town helps a lot in that arena too.

      Wait......wait....hearing news about Europe...!!!!!

No truer words have ever been said by mortal mankind.

One of my major dislikes was being given a work order that stated in simple terms "major warranty problem, fixit." So I fixed it and due to tooling costs it wasn't appreciated. I told the originator if you would have stated you wanted a Band-Aid, I would have given you one. He said I can't put a Band-Aid on it in writing. I already had an answer, I said it is 12 steps from your cubicle to mine and verbal works better than wasting the company's time and money.

In industry, work was prioritized and there was roughly the same deal. A priority 1 meant work until it was finished. Engineering had 2 product managers, sustaining and new product. One of them make the mistake of jumping on a co-worker about how his priority 1 was not even being worked on. Her answer was classic.. That 3" pile of paper is my pile of priority 1 work orders, just which of my priority one workorders are you referring to? He immediately dug his out and put it on top. Unfortunately, the other manager saw him. That escalated into a meeting with both product managers , their respective program managers and my team with the director of engineering. His answer was I'll prioritize all work orders until you children can learn to figure it out.

Same here with disliking crowds and traffic. I, no we dislike being jammed in to an urban or suburban area.

Depending on how long you were working nights; it can take time.

In the past, I had friends who worked 3rd shift and bid on a 1st shift job. Adjusting to the change was really hard on them for months.

                Yeah...agree...

I've been on 2nd shift for over 20 years and before that 3rd or graveyard shift for another 20 years.

It takes time to heal.. Hang in there. :D

In the 1970s, when Computer Aided Design (CAD) was new the equipment was very, very expensive. The company bought 4 terminals and had 8 employees trained to utilize the 4 terminals; the 8 operators were put on swing shifts. "First shift" was 6 am to 2 pm and "second" shift was 12 noon to 8 pm.
As the manager was too lazy to do the right thing; shifts changed by the month. As April 31st was Thursday and June 1st began on Friday; that was when the shifts changed. Imagine leaving work at 8 pm and starting the next morning at 6 am.
The good news it was easy to find another job with CAD skills. LOL

                    Wow!!!!

Wow Tugaloo....you are reminding me of how incredibly stupid many people really are...who never have to taste what they are dishing out to others...

Back when I worked graveyard shift...from 11 pm to 7am in the morning....some genius scheduled me for a rigging class from 7am to 3:30 PM and I then had to go home and come back to work that night at 11PM.

I did it but they paid me time and a half tor attending that class. I also found out something interesting....how many sleepyheads there were on day shift....while they talk junk about the graveyard shifts.

Some people are so incredibly stupid they think everyone works day shift....everyone is a daywalker...

And....as daywalkers...they are sitting on the only one in town....

True. The supervisor was demoted after I quit. I don't know why.

Your rigging class was abusive. I bet your tail was dragging that night.

In 1990, 3D CAD and the early versions of stress analysis were a highly sought after skills. I quit and went to Detroit for 2 years, then headed back South.
Too many liberals and draconic firearms laws. The liberal types moved there for jobs and the native Michiganders lost their State. The same has happened in too many other States.
