I've been quite surprised at my growing inability to be surprised......doesn't help keep me from being p*ssed off on a regular basis, though....

Sorry folks...changed my mind about the rest of this post...

  • Interesting conversation on devices used for invasion of privacy

This is a conversation I had with a member of another board. Curious to see how it plays out.

Friend: Well gotta run and get ready for work. Time to go save the people of <location> from....something... :-) I'll write later when I have more time.
    Have a great day...

Me: Dont forget the cape and batman utility belt. Never know when you might need a bobby pin and some cheeze whiz to make a bomb or something...

Friend: You know, a real batman suit would be kinda cool. I'll start writing that up. Request for laboratory protection suit, helmet and emergency operations equipment included....

Sad thing about government is that if I wrote a long enough request that it looked boring to read they'd sign off and approve it to avoid reading it. A polysyllabic propensity will get you everywhere in government :-) I could probably get ten million to research bobby pin and cheese whiz detection and defense procedures. I'll start writing that one up...

The endless meetings, politics, and apathy sometimes bores me with the government. Other days, though, like today, it's worth the effort. Today I'm designing and building a radio direction finder so the State Bureau of Investigation can use it to nail down the location of a guy using wireless internet and distributing child porn. So even if they don't catch the bad guy (and I hope they do), at least I'll spend the day in my lab and no one will bug me :-)

Me: Unfortunately for every good use they put to an invention like that, they misappropriate a dozen uses, and further limit the freedoms we take for granted now. No soapbox here, but I think this government is gonna really be pushing 'government control' very very soon. THey can run our lives and spend our money much better than we can, dont you think?

I do applaud you on helping find the porn perp though.. children grow up way too fast anyway, without something like that....

Friend: I would wholeheartedly agree with you on the issue of government control. Generally speaking, I'm the guy who invents or teaches people how to use most of the cloak and dagger stuff we use around here. I stay ever mindful of the rights of the individual when I come up with this kind of stuff. To the extent I can anyway. If some politician passes a law making police cameras in your bedroom legal, there's not much I can do about that. All I can do is hope that people like you, will go to the polls and vote in people to office, who won't try to strip your rights away :-) In the porn case however, they currently have the guy's location nailed down to a 4 house general area, and my device will absolutely nail it down to a single house. That will allow them to obtain a warrant, for the right house, and keep them from banging down three wrong doors looking for the sicko. Ultimately this protects the rights of the other three, as it will eliminate their homes from suspicion. Ultimately, if this thing I build works well on a repeatable basis (and everything I dream up works well eventually har har), it will prove their ability to do pinpoint computer searches down to a single location and raise the standard for evidence required to obtain a warrant. This will in the end, better protect your rights. Ok, I'll stop rationalizing to make myself feel better now. The real reason I'm building it is because no one else has figured out how yet :-) I have seen the case file on this one, with the pictorial evidence, and in this case sicko is grossly indescriptive as concerns how deviant and reprehensible this one is.

Me: So, will this invention in any way 'scope out' the other three in an attempt to keep from having someone knock on the door? Or will it only hone in on that exact signal obtained from viewing the porn he is distributing? Process of elimination by covert observation, is still an invasion of rights, in my book.
