I have always had a garden, but until this year I have never had room for more than a 10'X20' garden. That has now changed, and I am looking at using close to an acre for a garden.The land has never seen a garden before and was in trees about 5 to 7 years ago. I have been cleaning and burning for 2 months now. Here comes the question........ What implements are needed for a garden? I am being told that a PTO driven tiller is the way to go. If I go with that, then what would I use put in my rows?

Nope.....It is bottom land. Good dark soil that has washed down the hill over the years. I know what I am going to plant, I am just trying to avoid wasting money by buying equipment that I really don't need. I can plant a garden with a small tiller and a hoe, but I have recently bought a tractor and don't want to waste money on unnecessary attachments.

I am doing almost the same thing with 1/2 to 3/4 acres behind my house. I am going to use a scalf harrow (sp?) to cut the dirt and a disc harrow to plow it up.

I had a garden in this spot 10 or more years ago and made a go-kart track for the kids then let it grow back up with broom straw and black berry now its going back to a garden again. I lay my rows out with either a hand plow (looks like a wheel with a small wedge and a handle) or my favorite is two sticks and some string and a hoe and shovel, you can row out a acre in no time if you put your back into it and we all have a hoe and a shovel laying around.

I planted my onion sets out saturday 80 red 80 white 80 yellow and 20 strawberry plants. I hope to get my taters out this weekend, I am going to use three methods a plain ol hill, inside old tires, and in a wire basket enclosure about the same size as the tires and the same method adding dirt as the taters grow. AND I was able to talk to wife into letting me plant the onions in the flower beds in the front yard, this year if you can't eat it we aint planting it no silly flowers this year!

If you are going to be using seed start them now indoors, I use a starter tray and the little peet cup thingies. if you plan on setting out plants wait until the last frost or late march early april for around here. I have a small greenhouse I built last year.

I hope to get the tractor brought over to my house friday and turn the dirt, then I am going to add horse poop, and rabbit poop and 10-10-10 and turn that in the ground and let it set until spring the disc it all up again and row it out and plant. thats what I did 1o years ago and we had a great garden. I grow all my peppers and tomaters in 5 gal buckets around the pool.

now share some of you all's ideas with me, I would like to learn some new ways to grow food.

I always till in mushroom compost with my soil for the garden. It is incredible! Next time you are at Lowes pick up 1 bag and mix it in with your soil and plant something in it, then plant the same plant without it and watch the diffrence. I grow Jalepenos that look like baby bell peppers, and bell peppers the size of softballs.

I don't have either yet, that is what I am trying to figure out. I wonder if I would be better off just buying a 5' tiller to do the same as scalf and disc?

10-4 i thought you were the guy in gilbert i would'nt waste the money unless you were tilling more than an acre it just doesnt seem worth it unless you are older then the easier the better i could see

Get yourself a disc,maybe a plow.Plow it ,disc it then till it when your'e ready to plant.I like to keep my garden tilled all the time.I don't know that I would get the PTO tiller unless you have alot of room.You wouldn't wanna tear down anything already planted.A disc alone would probably suffice but the plow would loosen deeper and makes harvesting taters alot easier.

Cuda, you could lay off your rows with a cultivator, then use it when the plants are up to cultivate the garden. It's a decent way to tell where your rows are, right in the middle of the cultivator's center. If you've got a disc harrow, and the ground is soft enough, it will suffice as was said earlier, but you may have to make several passes over it. Depending on the type of disc, you may have to "overlap" each pass to keep from mounding up the garden, you're trying to keep it as level as possible. Good luck!

I don't plant a big garden, but I have two disc harrows that never get used since I discovered a spring tooth harrow. These things are awesome. I still lay off rows by hand even though I do have a cultivator bar with multiple feet. Just really don't mind getting in there with a good hoe. Just can't beat a good hoe my daddy always said.
