  • What would you be able to barter with?

Got a skill, extra food supply, or something else to trade? What would it be?

I'm stocking extra soup, tuna, sugar and flour. In exchange for firewood cut, a hole patched in the roof, or any other task I might need to have done.

Some ammo, custom reloads, the kid, not the dog, the wife maybe, some extra food. Maybe some fresh lizzard meat.

Well, I can't sling a cat in the house without hitting a cat. So I might have to barter a cat or two.

Always remember to take care of the old folks who are alone. I've seen many an hour spent by my 80+ year old childhood neighbor, shelling peas, breaking beans, tending children, just for the company of our family. My mom would always send us over to take her dinner or magazines or some apples, sometimes to get us out of her hair, but lots of times to give the lady company and so we could learn a thing or two about the 'old ways'....

This post was out of place, I just felt it needed to be said...

Plenty of extra ammo for trade, many skills, and great bartering skills from all those years of dealing in customer service.

That's a good question. I never planned to barter, but now that I think about it I may need a plan. As remote as I am, I figure that if you come here after the SHTF, then I may let you see another day. There is really no reason to be here unless you are up to "no-good". Seems a little drastic I guess, but I am already in my BOL and it will be protected.

I like to think in terms of hardware/tools/repairs and comfort items,,

                Plastic sheeting
Nails, screws, bolts (those dollar store packs for $1 are good trading fodder)
2 cycle oil (many folks store gas, but not 2 cycle oil)
                chainsaw bar lube
                WD-40,lubricants,grease catridges
                Car oil
                Common Spark plugs
Wiring, wiring connectors, wiring terminations, fuses, breakers
                Tarps
                bailing wire
                barb wire
                fencing
                lumber
                roofing shingles
                rope
                scrap metal
                charcoal
                propane
cheap screwdrives, wrenches, sockets (for barter use, yours should be high quality!)
                Razor blades,utility knives,cheap cutlery
canning lids, regular and widemouth (more valuable than ammo imho)
sweet products (sugar, hard candy, honey molasses, maple syrup)
                Batteries (AA,AAA,D,C and 9V)
                automotive fluids (brake,antifreeze,transmission)
RTV sealant (makes gaskets) silicone and foam sealents
cheap AM/FM radios (another $ store special)
                toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap
                clorox/bleach (unscented)
painkillers: aspirin, tylenol, motrin as well as allergy meds, immodium, etc.
cheap alcohol, cheap cigarettes (some folks will trade you anything to feed their addictions)

                thats just a start!!!

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Not everybody is up to no good. And some people who were not up to no good might make lots of trouble if not handled right. Wars get started with misunderstandings.

I suggest if you don't want people asking for help or offering to trade a nice sign that says "we help nobody and we don't trade" might make sense. Bartering makes a lot of sense to me on the other hand, and I am glad you are thinking about it (if you are truly remote the possibility might never come up on the other hand?)

I personally think you have to be very careful, if i plan to barter I will have somebody watching my back (thats what the 50 BMG and a good team of life minded folks are good for :) )

This thread has made me think about it......I'll overstock a few essentials just in case. Wife is bringing home another 1000 rounds of .22LR this afternoon. I like the idea of plastic (I buy it in 10-20 x 100' rolls), tar paper, nails, rope, stuff like that.

                    Ok....I'm onboard.:D

I understand your thinking, however you might get a little tired of seeing yourself everyday. :D

Seriously if it comes down all the way it will be necessary to barter. I have lots of skills, kinda of a jack of all things and master of some. I can fix almost anything if I can find or make the part. Then we have extra food that we grow and can and dehydrate so there is that.

Not sure I would part with any ammo, wouldn't even own up to having any. And for sure my wife would be covering me from a concealed spot. I have no doubt she has my back.
You can't get here from there. ;)

Anything you have extra can be bartered. The late Jeff Cooper said something like, "bricks of.22 ammo may be the barter unit of the new millenium".
I'm thinking batteries will be in high demand if there is no electricity.

Funny you would say that. I had just read the following from another site:

Jeff (Cooper) said that ammunition in many areas would have greater utility value than silver or gold coins. Once it was no longer readily found, a .22 ctg would be more than welcomed to pay for a cup of coffee at the diner. His advice was to store .22 lr Hollow Points (looks better in a barter situation) in quantity. He recommended the other popular ctgs too for those who want to have a wider trading resource.

Lotsa water under the bridge since the article was written. There was a big bruhaha about Winchester Silvertip ammo, seems like Federal has a premium defense round that is just recently off market or soon to be. Silver tips developed a large cult following willing to pay extra to have them for defensive carry. These rounds that enhance terminal ballistics are probably the most desired if you would trade them. Probably not to anyone but your neighbors.

Back to Wampum. Cooper endorsed keeping ammunition for all popular firearms, since most folks will not have adequate ammo supply when TSHTF. He recommended .22LRHP, 38sp, 357mag, 9mmP, 44mag, 45acp, .223rem, .243Win, .270win, 30-30win, 308win, 30-06spr as the core holdings. Jeff stated, depending on your area you might also want to have some 45Colt, 300WinMag. Cooper advised visiting the independent gun dealer who caters to the "one box a year man" to see what he stocks.

Does anyone here stock cartridges for firearms they do not own?

I am wondering, in addition to 22LR (hollowpoints) I stock the calibers I own
Pistol 9mm, 38/357 (mostly 38, more versatile), .32 ACP (not much), 45 ACP
                            Rifle .223, .308, 30-06, 50 BMG

These are mostly very popular anyway, but around here 30-30, .243, .270 are pretty popular too. I am also considering buying a few rounds for family members who I am not sure are well enough stocked.

Just curious what everyone else thinks. I am pretty well stocked in the calibers I own except maybe 50 bmg, like 10,000 rounds of 22LR and 10,000 of others combined.

We have limited supplys considering the circumstance.I feel we are only somewhat preped for TEOTWAWKI.
Bartering will become a necessity should we have no other means of obtaining items needed.
We have only just begun to find somewhat of a comfort level in our supplies. With proper rationing we will make it for at least (NOYB;)) months with extras only in a few items. This being food and water of course.

That being said I will be willing to barter select goods and services.I can do almost anything structurally or outside,as far as labor goes.
Would I work for a meal, yes,I've been doing it my whole life.
With bartering will come a trust issue.Do you want anyone to know you have enough of something to get rid of?
I don't think I would want to ask for something without having something visibly enticing to a fellow man.Just as I would not think a rational human would expect to live after he crossed the line without something in tow.I also would trade nothing for any items I suspected hed been ''taken'' from others.
