With all the attention with these rifles!! They serve no purpose to me,give me my deer rifles[some consider sniper]and iam fine, with the nuts that play with these and only stricken the laws, tighten the ammo, only at short distance they have no use at long but we all suffer...Ive explained to my kiddo's that the wize man said he who has 1000 bullets across the stream cant match the man that has a long rifle with one.....Txrebel

For me it's a situation of ammo supply. If things were to dry up, and only the Military were to have ammo, I want a rifle that fires the same caliber, .223 & .308. There's a tremendous amount of 7.62x39 already here as well. Plus bulk ammo in these calibers is cheaper than most commercial "deer ammo". I'm not a assault rifle "nut", but, being trained with them, and understanding the function of these weapons, I respect them. As far as "reach", I was a expert marksman in the 'Corps, hitting targets at 500yds with iron sights and a .223. I'm not too concerned with the reach of any of my rifles...

I don't keep any autos in my personal stockpile, either. I just know I'm better w/my Ithaca in close quarters, the ammos lighter, abundant and cheap. And I've finally stumbled across a long rifle I'm good with at respectable ranges....you guys can have your AKs and SKSs and Uzis....More ammo for both of us ;)

I have several SKS,the only reason why is I hold a C&R lic and when theYugo's hit the market a couple years back I could buy them in unissued condition for $79 ea and I could buy 7.62x39 surplus for under a $100 a case of 880rds so I added them and several cases of ammo to my collection, they are a hoot to shoot but if I need to fall back to one gun for survival it will always be my .22 rifle

          I'm not very picky...mini 14's, AR's and bolt guns...I have a few of each...all .223. Limiting handguns to 9mm, .357, .22, and .45acp...shotguns are all 12ga...and a .22 rifle for every window.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that we have them because we are free people living in a free country.(for now)
That being said, i i would rather have a dozen guys with "ugly guns" chasing me around than to have one guy with a scoped "deer rifle" out to get me.

I have to agree with David M. At 500 yds I was always in the black. With iron sights that is very impressive to me. I keep a .300 win mag and plenty of ammo on hand, but I will always have a couple of .223's and .308's on hand. The price difference for the ammo is just to great. For close quarters I have been impressed with the FN 5.7 X 28mm ammo. I picked up a PS90 a while back and while I would not want to snipe with it. It is very accurate under 100 yds and with the standard 50 rd mag it is half as light as anything else. Plus it is a whole lot of fun to shoot and its small. You can also carry 50 rds easier than 20 of .223. Of course thats just opinion and other than what I have on hand, it would be hard to get ammo during hard times. And always keep your .45-70 on hand for squirrels, then you don't have to skin them.

I believe they do serve a purpose. For those of us living in a suburban area they have all the range one might need to defend the home.
As a secondary purpose, they do annoy people who believe in 2nd ammendment limitations, and are just plain fun at the range.
Finally, I don't need a reason. I'm not a nut, but I like all my rifles. Given the choice I would prefer to do all defensive shooting at long range, that's what my 50 bmg rifle is can do, but we don't live in a perfect world. I really like all my weapons, revolvers, semi-auto pistols and rifles, Pump actions, bolt actions. I recommend everyone get a couple of each.

I think of all mine my remington is the most versatile. Accurate out much farther than the 223's and still capable of high volume fire when needed. I am also quite fond of my Garand too.

As an all around gun my R-25 gets my nod. And I think it looks pretty for an AR style rifle.

Pretty was a response to all those who refer to AR 15's as ugly guns

While I admit a they don't have the aesthetics of a good walnut stocked bolt gun, or even an M1 Garand, the beauty is in the utility. And the R25 does look nice to me, and the functionality of an accurate magazine fed 308 semi-auto are hard to argue against.:D

My vote is for my FAL. The best part of the FAL is that it is NOT an AR design. :D

Not being an AR design is partially why my new light rifle is the Sig 556. ARs have a place, but gas piston operation has some advantages.

FALS are great, I'm also a big fan of the M1 Garand, M1A, M14 series.

I guess I just like them all, to the detriment of my pocketbook.

There is one thing we all need to be careful of .308 NATO and .308 Win. are not the same, just as 5.56 and .223 have some differences. It can be hazardous to your health!

This is true, however it is not the same difference. In this case it is the 308 that is the higher pressure round, so a modern rifle chambered for 308 will handle the 7.62 NATO but older 7.62 NATO weapons should not fire the more powerful (higher pressure) 308 civilian round.
The dimensional differences in headspacing, etc, should not cause issues.
EDIT - It depends on how tight you headspacing is and the 7.62 rounds can potentially be too long if the stars line up jsut right.

With 5.56 vs .223 it is the opposite, the 5.56 military round is the higher pressure round compared to the .223 round.
