  • 7.62X39 Armor Piercing Ammo

    Ladies and Gents,

After inventorying my ammo supply, I found a few extra rounds of some really good quality NORINCO Chinese high carbon steel core armor piercing rounds. I've shot these through my SKS and AK's for years and they will punch right through 1/2 and 3/4 inch steel plate without any problem. I was thinking about putting them on Gunbroker and selling them, and I still might, but I figured I'd see what I might get in trade here. I'm interested in all kinds of ammo, gear, weapons and such. If you search the web, you'll see that this stuff has not been imported into the US since 1994 and is selling for big bucks. The headstamp reads 71 92 or plant 71 year 1992. This is the very desirable steel core ammo that was classified as "AP" or armor piercing by Clinton. Clinton and his administration BANNED this ammo from future importation back in 1994. This ammo has not been imported since so what is here is what is here. Here are a few photos for your viewing pleasure. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. Thanks!

I do love armor piercing ammo, but alas i have nothing that shoots 7.62x39 at this time.

i did just score some hard to find 308 AP

      Nice find!
My weapon can kill, it isn't limited to mere assault

Just out of curiousity, did some nation recently locate a stockpile of the stuff or something? I had never seen it before this past weekend, but several tables at the gun show had large amounts of 7.62x39 AP and tracer ammo. I thought it was odd, but interesting.

I don't think it can be imported, so if it was located overseas it wouldn't have made it here by official channels

It was banned from importation by the Clinton Administration in 94. So, what made it here before then is all we have. Mine has been stored in an ammo can since the mid 90's.

"Steel core" has made a come-back since the Clinton administration. 7.63X39, as well as 5.56. ESPECIALLY 5.56! It seems our boys in iraq had an issue with the steel core 5.56 as it would pass through the enemy and he kept coming forward. So there was a big controversy as to whether to switch to 6.8 for the extra stopping power. Turned out that when they switched back to lead core the issues went away. 6.8 is going away like the betamax. Also it should be noted that almost if not all indoor ranges have banned steel core not because of clinton, but because it penetrates their "traps" and it gets costly to repair and maintain. Just one point I wanted to make before I go to bed, The rifle or the ammo isn't nearly as important as a well aimed shot. Steel core ammo is very cool though! Especially shooting at steel plates 300-500 yards!!!!!

Yeah, its a rangemaster's worst nightmare ;) I agree with you on shot placement. As long as you can put them minute-O-coconut you'll be fine no matter what you're shooting! The .30 caliber AP round is definitely more effective at taking someone down then the M855 62 gr tungsten core AP round that our military is using in Iraq or Afganistan though.

Yeah, the stuff I saw all looked like 1970s vintage, approximately...definitely not new packaging...

Mine is circa 1992 and has been stored in sealed ammo cans with silica packs which is just about the newest you can get as far as that goes ;)

If I recall, and feel free to correct me it I am wrong, but it was a provision of the "Assault Weapons Ban" that sunset in 2004. So I think importation has resumed.

I talked with my dad and he said something along the same lines with this.

The AWB did sunset, that is true. But what did not is trade embargo's on countries that export this kind of ammo. If anyone is able to import this stuff, kudos to them but I've not seen it and I get around ;)

here is one link I have, but have seen many more on just the AP ammo.
It seems to be making a comeback of sorts, I have seen more of it for sale myself.
